Big

Going to avoid going into much detail on the front page for fear of NSFW, but here’s a good BBC article discussing recent revisions of the medical knowledge of female genitalia.

Mindball

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

Mindball is one step further than a Wii. It uses your brain activity to move a real ball across a real table. Sound cool? Unfortunately it’s $20K, which is only slightly more expensive than an xbox 360 and a HDTV. It turns out the game is more like an elaborate Ouiji Board. Too bad. Check out the article for more details.

Loosely related: Jim Anchower: I’m gonna get me a Wii if it kills me. One of my favorite Onion articles recently.

Sleep Well

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

How to: 5 Tricks to Get a good nights sleep 7 days a week goes through some obvious and not-so-obvious pointers for sleeping better. I have been trying to religiously adhere to waking up at the same time each day, so much so that I have stopped going out on the nights where I usually come home at 6 a.m. because I know it will screw with my schedule. I’m not sure if he still does this, but Jay was practicing never getting up after 9 a.m., if I remember correctly. Dabbling in meditation also helped me get down some good relaxation techniques that I have since used to fall asleep better as well.

So, what do you do? Do you care? Have sleep gnomes stolen your ability to relax?

Coke Rap

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Really really good article about rap’s drug obsession with cocaine. Worth a read for so many reasons, many of which are linguistic.

Good time to also point out that I cast my ballot for Ghostface’s Fishscale as this year’s best rap album. What’s the album about, coke naturally.

it’s magic

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Because my workplace already occasionally blocks darw1n.net for being lewd, I thought I’d help keep up the bar.

Even more NIN

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Straight from the NIN hotline. “Every day is exactly the same,” from With_Teeth is the number 1 dance single this year on the Billboard list. Is there some joke I’m not getting?

Drinks

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Excerpts from Hemmingway and Bailey’s Bartending Guide to Great American Writers. The book gives brief biographies of the writers, biographies pertaining to alcohol, their favorite drinks (and recipies thereof), and relevant quotes from their writings.

Marilyn Manson

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

I thought manson had given up on music entirely. All the symptoms of the end were there: Jordie White left, he released a greatest hits, he went on tour twice in two years. His website was taken down and replaced with a weird promo for his movie about Lewis Carrol. I figured someone wanted to give him a chance to make a masterpiece like House of 1,000 Corpses and that we’d never see much from him again.

But he’s back, and with music. Manson worked with Danny Elfman to do a new version of This is Halloween for the re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Manson claims to be an “artist” now and that he’ll work in whatever medium he likes the most at that moment. The following quote from an interview with Manson indicates just how diverse he plans to be:

Manson has all sorts of ideas of things he wants to do: He’s hoping to market his chosen poison, absinthe, which he calls his “green mistress,” in this country and perhaps even brand a new perfume that will “smell like children.” He’s putting out a book of his paintings, titled “The Death of Art”, a compilation of the large-scale watercolors he makes on the floor around 3:00 A.M. and that have a following among some Hollywood celebrities – he has painted Angelina Jolie, and Jolie and Brad Pitt have asked him to paint a group portrait “when their family is finished,” says Manson.

I don’t really care about the diversity (does he know absinthe is illegal here?). I just hope it encourages him to keep making music once in a while.

More new NIN

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

Here’s what Trent has to say:

Is it possible I am actually finished writing and recording a new nine inch nails record? Apparently so. We begin mixing in January!

Juggling fifteen all-new tracks around. Testing sequences. No leftovers from “with teeth”. Highly conceptual. Quite noisy. Fucking cool.

Can’t say that I’m not thrilled, but NIN needs to just fucking end. I have far too many CDs, mp3s, and the like. Plus these concerts are getting expensive.

Denoument

Friday, December 15th, 2006

A quick update, since this is easier than a mass email. Things didn’t go so swimmingly at Northeastern, so I’ve gone on a leave of absence while I decide whether or not to continue there, though the leave will probably end up permanent. At present I’ll be looking around for entry-level writing/editing/journalizing jobs, so if you know of any, send your recommendations on down. Since I am rather low on cash, I will also be accepting applications to be my “sugar daddy.” In exchange for room and board, I will do your cooking and cleaning, as well as perform my… “womanly duties.” That’s all for now, later.
