This American Videogame

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

“A Life Well Wasted” is, in their words, “…an internet radio show about videogames and the people who love them. Each episode focuses on a specific subject and employs interviews, music, writing, and fast-paced editing to create something unique in the podcasting space.” The style is very much an homage to “This American Life,” and they have done a very good job, thus far. The first episode is about the death of Electronic Gaming Monthly, and weighs in at just over 45 minutes. I’m interested to see where it goes.

Ira

Interview with Ira Glass. The second season of This American Life is out on DVD now, although frustratingly you can’t get it on Netflix yet (WTF?). I’ve seen the first season and it was really, really surprisingly good… he does point out that there’s virtually no cross-over audience, which surprised me until I remembered I was potentially the only one I know who’s seen the show. He also mentions they will be having more economy-based episodes, and that they are working on getting more of their radio stories made into movies.

Using Bart Simpson’s voice to promote Scientology is not acceptable in any way.

Highly amusing tale of airline culinary woes. Not really sure why, but something about this complaint letter had me laughing quite out loud. ze linken

Games

I had a Python class the other day taht started out with the instructor making us all check out EveryVideoGame.com

If you click the little link at the top right that says “arcade”, it takes you to a place where you can play in-browser versions of a bajillion old video games (at least NES, haven’t checked for other systems yet). I haven’t actually tried to play the games at work, and I keep forgetting to try it at home… but it looks like it could be very coool.

lo, I added a title to the post, -j

automagik

Apparently Microsoft has made a product that automagikally generates music to go along wiht an audio track… so of course now youtube has a bunch of people who have sung covers of famous songs and put up the results. I highly recommend “Creep” and “Wonderwall”.

Figure

I had no idea that you could actually order a 3D model of your WoW character, wearing whatever gear you have and in whatever pose you like. I find this cool a) as a gamer who has been attached to his characters before b) from a technological standpoint that it’s possible and c) as someone who does not have a WoW character and so won’t be tempted to actually do it.

Who was General Tso?

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

The history of Chinese food. Most of it, not surprisingly, is not Chinese. Totally fascinating but strangely disappointing. Watching Chinese people try to figure out what to do with a fortune cookie is alone worth it though.

Edit: I just realized the preview for this is an overweight Chinese woman giving us the finger. Awesome.

Antz!

I always thought ant hills would look pretty boring inside. Boy was I wrong.
