Star Art

Friday, February 27th, 2009

This is possibly even dorkier than usual, but I very much enjoyed a series of photoshops adding Star Wars things into classic art. “Satan Devouring a Child” and the Escher hand-with-globe were my favs.

Here they are…b-b-b-b-buttons!

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Check it out, the second round of buttons are done! I’ve got eight relatively new designs plus three others (not shown) based on this picture and a few super limited eyeballs that I painted by hand (also not shown). Believe me, as I stand on the precipice of button moguldom, I can clearly see the obstacles in front of me and I will persevere! Hrm, maybe scratch that last part.

Lastly, here’s a new painting that I did as a quick study.

Update: I brought some buttons to the store today. Here’s the display.

Expat

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I’ve started to settle into life as an ex-patriot. The adjustment as been surprisingly easy. Geneva is a very international city, and work is still in English, so it doesn’t feel too strange. The little differences stand out. Some noticeable ones:

  • The yogurt section in the grocery store is huge. Yogurt alone is easily the size of most American store cheese + yogurt + sour cream sections.
  • Instead of 4-way stops or traffic lights, there are roundabouts.
  • British-isms are everywhere (people always say, “Are you waiting at the end of the queue?”)
  • Etiquette for forming lines is very different. No one will yield to you if you don’t stick up for yourself.

Trailer for the Donnie Darko sequel (S.Darko). Apparently it’s going straight to DVD. Expectations are not exactly high. Here.

New Painting: Karma’s Smoke Break

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Here’s a piece from yesterday, entitled “Karma’s Smoke Break.” There’s lots of exciting small things happening here that I’m saving up for a bigger blog post. Alright, no so exciting, but involving another art show in late March, a button (badges or pins, depending on your locale) machine, and some postcards. Enjoy.

This post is also dedicated to having a second blog member in the EU!

Escape From City 17

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

So some hardcore Half Life 2 fans decided to make a series of short films based on the HL2 world. It’s pretty impressive for some independent guys with only a few hundred bucks.

whilst we’re talking about linguistics and podcasts, I found this tale of a highly intelligent parrot rather interesting when it showed up on my Fresh Air podcast: alex and me

life of lo tidbit

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Just a little bit o’ tid: I now live in Los Angeles. It’s been a couple week process, but I now live in an apartment in Pasadena, have internet, and am mostly box-free. I’m in downtown Pasadena, and actually really like the neighborhood. I’m on the 4th floor of an apartment building that’s over a rather yuppie outdoor mall, but there are a lot of cool little restaurants/shops/bookstores in the area. I also started work on Shrek today, which is still kind of blowing my mind. I haven’t ventured into actual downtown LA yet, but that’s on the agenda for this week. Further bulletins as events warrant.
